Unfortunately, period-shaming is still a thing. Worse, it still happens in more ways than we can ever imagine.

However, this does not mean that we can’t do anything about it. Sure, a lot more things still need to be done. But, we can always start from somewhere, right?

And so, we present to you some tips on how to fight period shaming.

Talking about the real struggles that come with periods

Periods can be difficult. For some, it can even be painful. Then there is no point shaming people who go through it.

Instead, we should talk about the real struggles menstruating people are faced with. We should openly talk about the physical pain periods often bring which, unfortunately, are still not taken seriously by some medical professionals.

There are a lot more difficulties faced by menstruating individuals across the globe, really, so period shamers need to shut up.

No longer hiding period products

Besides talking about menstruation in a hushed voice, many of us also got used to hiding period products as much as we could, as though they were illegal stuff. This has to change, though.

There’s nothing wrong with these period products. Plus it’s about time that we discuss them, so others would stop treating menstruation as though it weren’t for real. It is also the only way we can make others aware of how menstrual products remain inaccessible for many individuals around the world.

Using the correct terms when talking about menstruation and encouraging others to do the same thing

Buwanang dalaw? Bisita? Aunt Flo? Time of the month? Code red? What?! Just call it menstruation or period!

There is nothing shameful about menstruation since it’s a normal bodily function. So why not use the proper terms for it? After all, it is only by talking about periods scientifically that we can clearly articulate our needs as menstruating individuals.

Spreading correct information about periods

Sadly, many people still don’t understand the science behind menstruation. No wonder, silly misconceptions about periods still exist to this day, like some of the period-related superstitions many of us grew up believing in.

Of course, there are also those dangerous practices that are connected to menstruation, just like chhaupadi that is still practiced by some in Nepal despite being illegal.

To counter these misconceptions, we need to spread the right information about periods by talking about them more openly.

What else can you do?

Besides providing convenient and eco-friendly period solutions, Sinaya Cup is also committed to providing young women with quality menstrual and reproductive education. That is why we have the CUPacity Caravan, a FREE experiential learning and hands-on program that we conduct in different public schools in the Philippines.

Apart from menstrual and reproductive health, we cover topics like body understanding and acceptance, goal-setting, and women empowerment as well. We also give away FREE menstrual cups after the seminars.

We believe that we empower young women by equipping them with the right information. And the great news is that you, too, can be a part of our journey by working with us. Currently, we are in need of an advocacy manager and advocacy volunteers to help us with our education program. For more information about these opportunities, visit our Jobs page by clicking here.
